Makâni strives to express emotional content above all else, and employs undulating rhythms, pointillistic textures, and pandiatonic harmonies to communicate a hopeful and introspective experience to his audiences. Raised on the music of Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, and Chopin, he is indebted to classical forms to give his music shape. He is passionate about chamber music, and takes pride in playing the compositions of his colleagues.
On top of concert music, Makâni has written soundtrack for projects across varying mediums, working with Intel Corporation, United Way, the Smithsonian Institution, and the African Community & Conservation Foundation and Zambezi Partners. He loves animation and video games and is always seeking opportunities to contribute his style to them.
Makâni is an invigorated piano teacher, teaching both K-12 and adult piano students. In his lessons, he delves into the way the mind subconsciously processes music, and how we engage the senses of hearing, sight, and touch when we play an instrument. He strongly believes that understanding intervals, the sonic distance between pitches, is a cornerstone of musical fluency. Check out the lessons page for more information.
